Join us for a unique opportunity to study with Shelley Socolofsky, Faculty member at the Oregon College of Art & Craft. The three day workshop will take place in conjunction with the opening of Small Tapestry International 3: Outside the Line at the Handforth Gallery in Tacoma, Washington and the opening of TAPS: Limited  Edition at the Brick House Gallery. Both openings will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2013.

Workshop description
This workshop will investigate the possibilities of narrative, not as linear illustration, but rather as a storytelling mode enriched through personal symbolism and made more complex through the use of richly layered surfaces with transparency and depth. Various strategies will be explored that will infuse our designs with a sense of time, dream action, and drama. In addition we will review and apply traditional formal compositional strategies. The workshop will begin with a discussion of various ways to think about narrative. We will then explore some of those possibilities by developing our own personal narrative, using collage and learning and applying some of the design tools available in Photoshop. Digital techniques explored will include layering, transparency, copying, burning, specialized clipping affects, wrapping for repeat affects, reflections and shadows, masking, cropping, transforming and leveled layer adjustments. Throughout we will discuss and analyze our developing designs for strong and dramatic compositions. The design work will be followed by demonstrations of weaving techniques that we will each, in turn, use to interpret a detail of our digitally designed cartoons.
